Planning a Group Visit That Centers Dignity and Inclusion
Group visits can either reinforce stereotypes or build real understanding. Intentional planning helps ensure visits honor dignity and create meaningful shared experiences. In L'Arche Philippines, we welcome groups from schools, companies, and other organizations, but we do so with a clear focus on mutual respect and genuine connection rather than "charity" or "observation."

Set expectations early
Before the visit, communicate guidelines on language, privacy, photography, and respectful interaction. It is essential that all participants understand they are entering a home and a community, not a facility or a tourist site. Respecting the personal space and privacy of core members is our top priority.
Clear expectations reduce awkwardness and help participants engage with maturity and care. We provide a pre-visit orientation guide that covers basic disability etiquette and the history of L'Arche, ensuring that everyone arrives with a heart ready to listen and learn.
Design for interaction, not observation
Activities should invite shared participation rather than passive viewing. This builds connection and decreases social distance. Instead of a "tour," we prefer activities like shared art projects, gardening, or preparing a meal together. These "side-by-side" activities allow relationships to form naturally.
A short debrief after the visit helps participants integrate what they learned. We often find that the most profound insights come from the simple moments of laughter or shared work, rather than any formal presentation.
Guidelines for Schools and Students
For student groups, we emphasize the concept of "service-learning." This means the visit is part of a larger educational journey. We encourage students to research disability rights and inclusion before they arrive, and to reflect on their experiences afterward.
Teachers should help students move beyond "pity" to "partnership." The goal is for students to see core members as peers with their own gifts and stories, not just as people who need help. This shift in perspective is the most valuable lesson a student can take away from a visit to L'Arche.
Guidelines for Corporate Groups
Corporate visits are most effective when they are part of a long-term CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) strategy. While a one-day visit can be a great introduction, we encourage companies to think about how they can support the community through skills-based volunteering or sustained resource sharing.
During the visit, we ask corporate participants to "leave their titles at the door." In our community, everyone is equal. Engaging in simple, manual tasks alongside core members can be a powerful way for professionals to reconnect with their own humanity and the value of simple presence.
Practical Logistics and Safety
To ensure a positive experience for everyone, we limit the size of visiting groups. Large crowds can be overwhelming for some of our core members and can disrupt the peaceful atmosphere of our homes. We typically recommend groups of 10-15 people at most.
Accessibility is also a key consideration. We work with visiting groups to ensure that the planned activities are inclusive for everyone, regardless of their physical or cognitive abilities. Safety protocols, including health checks and emergency procedures, are always reviewed before any group activity begins.
